The Groove Diggers, started by alto sax man Jim Hall, guitarist Larry Peterson, bassist Felipe Godinez, and drummer Lew Langworthy, has taken several shapes with different players since it formed in the 1990s. Jim Schmidt and Larry have played together in the band over the past 12 years. In 2008 the band recorded a live performance album, “Live at Left Coast,” with Christine LaPado on bass and the late Richard Gibson on drums.
Most recently Larry, Jim and Christine have been performing as a trio. The trio played at Wine Time for the The Local Table fund raiser for the CSUC Anthropology Museum on Sunday, April 12 from 4-7 p.m..
This year’s NorCall Jazz Festival at the Sierra Nevada Big Room on Sunday, April 19 featured the Groove Diggers with special guest Greg D’Augelli on tenor sax and violinist Sid Walker.
The Ebony & Ivory series features local artists on the newly restored 1911 Steinway B Grand Piano, making the Women’s Club one of the most desirable venues in Chico for piano solo and ensemble performance. Proceeds from E&I concerts will help defray the costs of the restoration.
