Mood: Swing with guitarist Jimmy Grant
Mood: Swing is an acoustic swing trio, headquartered in Chico for the past five years. The group specializes in hot swing and gypsy jazz as well as older Brazilian music and is anchored by husband and wife team Robert and Pam Laughlin, playing acoustic guitar and clarinet respectively. Robert and Pam have been playing their instruments since childhood and will celebrate their 33rd year of marriage this year.
The third leg of the trio varies from gig to gig. For the March 18 concert Mood: Swing feels fortunate to have guitarist Jimmy Grant round out the trio. Jimmy discovered the music of Django Reinhardt when still in his teens in Chico. Grant immersed himself totally in this demanding genre of music, and became a passionate practitioner on his Django style guitar. Now in his 20’s, Jimmy lives in the Bay Area, has traveled extensively with nationally known bands and now fronts his own quartet. In recent years, he has added the descriptor “composer” to his resume. His band has recently released its second CD.
Robert and Pam have been playing music with Jimmy since he was 17 years old, and have borne witness to his ever increasing musical talents.
The Bob Kirkland Trio
The Bob Kirkland Trio was formed in 2013 when Bob decided to “take public” the jazz skills he’d been developing in the practice room the previous seven years. Typically including electric guitar and upright bass, the ensemble occasionally expands to a quartet with the addition of a drummer.
The trio plays straight ahead jazz from the 1940’s and 50’s and standards from the Great American Songbook. Some of the great musicians who have lent their talents to the Trio include Tyler Mansfield, Chris Wenger and Chris Loizeaux on guitar, Matt Christensen, Jack Lemley and Nate Furgason on bass and Percy Furgason on drums.

Robert Laughlin, solo pianist
At the March 18 concert Robert will be providing a brief program of New Orleans music on the Women’s Club Steinway, an instrument he feels is well suited to the lively rhythms of the New Orleans Piano sound. This is Robert’s second concert of the Ebony and Ivory series.
Robert Laughlin grew up and went to school in the Bay Area, where he first started studying piano at the age of 23. Soon after he moved to Quincy and finally to Chico in 1975. In the late 70’s and early 80’s he played in a few local bands around Chico and as a solo player. In 1982 he devised his own method of teaching piano to large groups, taught classes at Chico State, and eventually brought his program to over 100 colleges.
He retired from teaching a couple years ago, but his course is still taught by others throughout the country. www.pianofun.com
He learned several genres of music over the years, including western swing and New Orleans piano. Robert has made numerous trips to New Orleans to absorb and perfect the New Orleans piano sound. He has had a chance to study with such luminaries as Allen Toussaint and Dr. John. He currently plays piano with the local New Orleans rhythm and blues band Swamp Daddy.
